Niacinamide by percentage, and where the extra stops helping
Most of the published appearance work sits between 2% and 5%. Shelves are full of 10% and 12%. Those two facts are worth putting side by side.
Niacinamide is one of the few skincare actives where a reader can compare a shelf percentage against a published one, because the studies state their concentrations and the products state theirs. Doing that comparison is unflattering to the shelf.
Much of the appearance work sits at 2% to 5%. The sebum work used 2%. The pigmentation work used 2% and 5%. Products routinely carry 10%, and 12% appears on plenty of shelves.
What the extra buys
There is no matching body of work showing that doubling or quadrupling the concentration doubles or quadruples anything. What does increase with concentration is the reports of flushing, warmth and irritation, which are dose-related and well documented anecdotally.
So the honest summary is that a 12% product is a marketing number attached to a real ingredient. It is not a fraud and it is not evidence.
Why brands do it anyway
Because a percentage is one of the few numbers a cosmetic can legally print, and because a shopper who has been taught that percentages matter will read 12% as better than 5%. The same brands that print 12% niacinamide print nothing at all on their retinol, which is the tell: the figure appears when it flatters and vanishes when it does not.
The vitamin C question
The old advice to keep niacinamide away from L-ascorbic acid comes from work at temperatures that do not represent a face. In normal use the two coexist. The residual reason to separate them is practical rather than chemical: L-ascorbic acid wants a low pH vehicle, and building one formula that suits both is harder than building two.
What to do with this
Pick a product for its formula and its price, not for its niacinamide number. If a routine already contains 5%, moving to 12% is not the upgrade the packaging implies.
