Ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids, and the ratio nobody publishes
Barrier repair research is about a mixture of three lipid classes in proportion. Packaging is about one of them, because it has the best name.
The outer layer of skin holds a lipid matrix made of three classes: ceramides, cholesterol, and free fatty acids. The research that the barrier-repair category is built on is about all three together, in proportion, and about what happens when the proportion is wrong.
That last part is the interesting bit. Incomplete mixtures applied to damaged skin performed worse in that work than balanced ones. The mixture is not a sum of helpful ingredients where more is better. It is a recipe with a ratio.
What packaging does with that
It names ceramides. Ceramide is the word with recognition, and the other two classes are either absent from the front of the box or delivered quietly inside a plant oil that is listed under the oil’s own name.
Across the seven products in our barrier ranking, not one publishes a ratio. Three name all three lipid classes somewhere on the page, which is more disclosure than the rest and is scored as such. The remaining four name ceramides and leave the rest to the ingredient list.
Reading the INCI entry rather than the box
“Ceramide NP” is a specific molecule. “Plant ceramides”, “ceramide complex” and various polyglycerides are different entries with different meanings. A front-of-box ceramide claim sitting above an INCI list with no named ceramide is a gap worth seeing, and it appears in this category more than in any other we score.
The practical version
A cream that names all three classes has told you it is trying to build the mixture rather than borrow the word. That is a weaker signal than a published ratio would be, and it is the strongest signal currently available on a shelf.
